What exciting things to do and memorable places to stop do you recommend for a USA road trip?

I’m in the very early stages of planning my Gap Year which I’ll be taking at the end of 2010 after my A levels. Thinking of starting up in Maine and making my way through the USA. I’ve got a few places I want to stop at but I’d be greatful for suggestions on places to stop that would make my trip memorable – exciting activities, beautiful scenery etc!
